An excerpt from “Notes on Sheep”, a series of more than a thousand notes in the Archive by a shepherd from Yuu in the Nemeus Archipelago. They submit a new one almost daily.

354-01-14 at 5:24h after sunrise

Reached the flock north of the Hat Mountain today. It's thriving: the valley has lots of grass and very little wind. It's a bit muddy, perhaps.

Next come detailed notes on the well-being of every single sheep, around 50 of them. Each one is mentioned by name.

The cats are doing well. Fluke caught a mouse and didn't know what to do with it. I'm still training F'loise to notice when she's too far away to hear me.

I heard someone was looking for a mountain guide in Olo’an, so that will be my next stop.

The end of the note is marked by a selfie of the shepherd. They look young, even though their face is quite weathered and framed by grey, streaked hair. A terrifyingly large mountain lion rests its head on their lap. The background shows a breathtaking panorama of Yuu's mountainous landscape and the glistening ocean in the distance.
